Thread: Dragon Quest thread : DQXI on PS4, 3DS & Switch

I got myself hooked on DQV and put in somewhere around 11 hours already. The game is just great, and that applies to almost everything about it. The story, despite the 16 bit graphics, already managed to emotionally move me early on, which I found very impressive. The character and monster designs are amazing. I know Toroyama did a lot of the designs, and you can tell, as Bianca looks like Bulma's long lost sister. The slime knights especially amuse me to no end. The thought of someone bouncing into battle like that just kills me. There's an endless amount of side quests (though quests isn't really the right word, more like activities), including casinos and slime races that make FF7 look almost thin by comparison. The sheer depth of the monster recruiting system is staggering. It's hard to imagine trying to pick and choose among 80 different types.

Could I nitpick? Certainly. The individual leveling system is entirely automated, so the leveling decisions come from which 3 companions to use, and which 3 (leaving one spot open for recruitment) companions to allow to leech xp. There are a decent amount of gear choices to make, though. The seeds that permanently increase one stat of one character by a little seem almost silly not to use them on your main dude who's always leading unless you're convinced you have another permanent character in your ever growing arsenal. As diverse as the monster system is, the balance seems off at times. Some just seem pathetic compared to others, though I suppose that's to be expected. The camera system on the DS is normally beautiful, but it is either unfinished or unimplemented in various areas. Sometimes you can't rotate the camera (though it may just be because they don't WANT you to in some areas), but in other areas the wall on the near side doesn't even have a texture assigned to it. You rotate the camera just to see black there.

I'm not necessarily all that far into the game yet, but I think I'm far enough to understand the depth of it, and it impresses me. I half look forward to and half dread the time when I have 40 different monsters to choose from with 5+ abilities each. I got Radiant Historia at the same time, but DQV has had such a grip on me that it's still shrinkwrapped, and seems likely to stay that way until I finish the DQV story. I don't know how completionistic I'll feel after beating the main storyline, but probably not so much that I'd leave another game totally unopened for it.

Got my copy today. DS cases are... surprisingly hard to open compared to CD, DVD, and Bluray cases. Now, just gotta wait till my 3DS gets out of layaway to plop this puppy in.

Btw, Manu. I've heard rather good things about 999, can you recommend it? (tho your avatar basically already gave me that answer)

I've heard a LOT of good things about 999. Still hoping for a UK release (or at least someone who can get me it from America.)

999's a good game. Basically like a more mature "choose your own adventure".

Kinda awesome. Although I just bought them on the Gameboy Colour last year :/ Pity they couldn't have ported 8 over to the Wii.

I doubt it'll come out here. The snes ones never had a translation and the nes/gbc ones are out of date with the current style enix are pushing in the west, so they'd have to actually have to spend money to translate them, whereas in japan this seems just to be a just a five second nes+snes rom to disc job.

Actually saw a copy in game once, didn't know anything about it and just left it.

I've been kicking myself ever since.

That's true. It'll be the equivalent of the Super Mario anniversary.

Although it would be cool to have that, the Mario and the inevitable upcoming Zelda one together. Oh well.

I thought that Dragon Quest IX was a success, enough so that Nintendo published VI for the NA after Square cancelled it.

I didn't know they remade 1&2 for SNES. I would love if they did release it stateside, though. IV, V, VI, and IX did well here. I think they could pull off some translation work for us English speakers.

The 1-3 snes remakes have all been fan translated a while back if you're interested in how they turned out.

That reminds me. Apparently the UK IS getting Dragon Quest IV now....with pre-order bonus in some stores (although I pre-ordered IX from Game and got diddly squat yet they claimed to have slime keyrings.)

Kinda wish I waited since I barely touched it due to Pokemon and the 3DS

    You mean VI :P

What's the preorder bonus, I haven't heard anything about that? GAME online aren't giving anything out by the looks of it. I got the Slime Stack keyring from from GAME.

1 more week until it's out though, can't wait.

I'll probably import the collection, but I guess we'll have to hope that Nintendo comes to rescue and localises it for an English release.

Just ordered a copy of the Super Famicom version of DQ I & II aswell...

It's okay once the game starts but there is literally like two hours of walking around, talking to people and running errands before the goddamn GAME actually kicks in and you can fight monsters.

Even better than that, its possible to be killed by those early monsters (I shouldn't have to run from a damn slime!) before you save, and thus lose those two hours.
