Thread: Urouge's AMV Corner

  1. #1

    Default Urouge's AMV Corner

I've decided to consolidate all of my AMV discussion to a single thread, since there has been interest in giving me suggestions and comments on various things. I'll update this thread with every new AMV that I create, as well. I'm happy to take any constructive criticism, since I'd like to get better at these. For those who wish to have copies of my AMV's, I post them all on Megaupload. The link in my signature will show a full list of the AMV's that I have available for download, and the specific links are included in the hidden tags for each AMV as well. However, I don't plan to upload Thriller to Megaupload until I revise it.

My username on Youtube is UrougeAP, and most of my videos are by link only now.

Here are the AMV's that I've released, in order of creation, with the newest one at the bottom. (Who it's about followed by what the music is):

Jango the Hypnotist - "Thriller" by Michael Jackson
    Hidden:
This was my very first AMV. Michael Jackson's death inspired me to create this, along with Jango's match in the character tournament. It got such great responses from people that I was encouraged to continue making AMV's after this was completed. I plan on revising this AMV for his third round match, since there are things that I believe could be done better. This and all of my other AMV's up until Nami's were made with Sony Vegas Platinum edition (the one part with song subtitles was unavoidable due to a corrupted RAW file).

The Buggy Pirates - "Fun Lovin' Criminal" by Fun Lovin' Criminals
    Hidden:
My second AMV. I always loved it when people meshed the manga in with the anime for AMV's, which I tried to do here. Admittedly, a lot of it was fairly rough, and I'm almost ashamed now to call this a final draft because of all the imperfections. Despite that fact, I love how the AMV as a whole turned out.

Mr. 3 (Galdino) - "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns n Roses
    Hidden:
Early work. It's ok, but there are a lot of little things about it that annoy me now. Oh well.

Enel - "Thunderstruck (live)" by AC/DC
    Hidden:
The AMV of the two from that match that had a stronger response to it. I think it's a great AMV, but there are a few things that glare at me when I watch it that I wish I had fixed. Fortunately, the problems are few and far between, and most people don't seem to take notice.

Nami - "Fighter" by Christina Aguilera
    Hidden:
This is my first AMV after switching to Sony Vegas Professional (because I had just found out that Professional was significantly better than Platinum). I made the upgrade because I really wanted to use masking for this video (where she seperates from the background at the end). Masking is a feature found only in Professional (along with others), so I went ahead with the upgrade. My next AMV that I'll release (since it was started a while ago) and any future remakes will be the only ones that will use Platinum again. This is also the first AMV that I accepted critiques on so that I could polish the video before releasing it. I will continue to get critiques on my AMV's before I release them from now forward. Thanks to Sai-chan and Blue-san for their critiques of this AMV. This has been my most heavily praised AMV to date, and after only one week it became my most watched AMV as well. Ironically, along with being my most rated AMV, it's also my AMV with the lowest rating. The internet is a mysterious place.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PQKFY001

I don't really have much of an opinion on Christina Aguilera, I'm not a fan but I don't have any particular hate for her music either. I was pretty sick of this song by the time I was done making this AMV, though.

Bon Kurei - "The Show Must Go On" by Queen
    Hidden:
This is an AMV I made that features Mr 2 Bon Kurei (Bentham). I will probably make a 2nd AMV for him once Impel Down is fully animated, because he's simply too awesome in that. It took me a long time to find a song I liked, but thanks to robbybevard, I finally found one that I was really happy with. I went through a few different ending sequences before ultimately going with a very complex one when it was all said and one. As before, special thanks to Sai-chan, robbybevard, eerie, and Blue-san for their critiques. I think I managed to one up myself with the timing yet again, and I hope you all enjoy it.

Crocodile - "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio
    Hidden:
I made a Croc AMV. Unfortunately it took me a long time to figure out how to get this one to work on youtube. Between that and my internet being down for a day and a half before I had to get it published, I didn't have time to get feedback on it before I had to post it for the match that I was making it for. If people have good ideas for me, I might do a version 2 of this thing.

Sabaody Rumble - "Ready Steady Go" by Paul Oakenfold
    Hidden:
My first non-character based AMV. Also my first techno AMV. It's basically just my take on the craziness of the Sabaondy arc once the fighting starts. I put a decent amount of time into this one, and I'm happy with the final product.

The stuff that isn't on youtube right now:
    Hidden:
Dr. Hiluluk - "Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty
    Hidden:
I was finally starting to feel comfortable with Sony Vegas Platinum when I made this AMV. This was my first attempt at a more emotional AMV. I found the AMV to be very very easy to create, and as a result I didn't advertise it very much. Now that I go back and watch it, I se no reason why I shouldn't have.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=00QRF9OC

Carue - "Beer" by Reel Big Fish
    Hidden:
This was my first attempt at a humor AMV. I think it's pretty amusing still, so I'm fairly happy with it. Credits for giving me the music idea to go with Reel Big Fish goes to robbybevard. I don't have much else to say about this AMV. It's different from any other AMV that I've done and I love it.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HVHGS5QE

Chopper vs Zoro - "Menouthis" by E.S. Posthumus
    Hidden:
A totally different kind of AMV. This was originally supposed to be the story for the Zoro vs Chopper match. I had it all planned out, and I was going to chop up the music to include dialogue in between to make an actual story. In the end I discovered that it's nearly impossible to find good One Piece dialogue (since I wanted it to be accurate) without annoying background music that made the entire thing sound like complete shit. I ended up deleting all my work and starting over after about 6 hours and came up with this to use as the VS image instead. Even though it's not at all what I originally wanted to do, it still came out to be pretty cool.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XTQE4F50

Don Krieg - "Blow Me Away" by Breaking Benjamin
    Hidden:
The first of my two AMV's at once campaign. I thought it would be fun to release an AMV for both Don Krieg and Enel when they were matched against each other. The music isn't great, but it fits Don Krieg perfectly. I really loved some of the timing I was able to create with this video. I'm especially proud of the explosions at the end. The funny thing is that in the bridge it looks like I reused animation, but I didn't. I only discovered after I published the video that the animators reused that animation. (*shake fist*) But it's not a big deal and it's certainly not worth releasing a version 2 over.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EZJ9LKOR

Smoker - "Smoke" by Mr Ed Jumps the Gun
    Hidden:
This is my newest AMV, which is about Smoker. When I found this song I just knew I had to use it. This will be my last original AMV made with Vegas Platinum (future remakes will still use it to make my life easier). This might be the fastest AMV I ever make. I really like how it turned out in the end, so I hope you guys do too. Thanks to Sai-chan, eerie, Blue-san, and robbybevard for their critiques.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SSXIAZS6

Brook vs Smoker - "Manus Dei" by James Dooley
    Hidden:
I made this for the tournament. Politics happened. It's probably my last trailer style AMV for the tournament.

    Megupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=21M6XBL7

Sanji - "Goldeneye" by Tina Turner
    Hidden:
I really wanted an extra day to work on this and perfect it. It's not totally polished (I might go back and do that some day, who knows). I didn't get a chance to get hardly any critiques at all. Sai-chan was nice enough to give me a quick one with virtually no warning, which was helpful and she gave me some ideas. Anyway, it's still pretty cool even without the usual revision process. Here's my Sanji AMV (I will revise this more before I put it up on Megaupload).

Nico Robin - "Manhattan Project" by Rush
    Hidden:
I've been planning this one for a long time and I stuck it into a competition since I was recently asked to provide an AMV for one. Thanks to eerie and Sai-chan for their critiques. I'm really proud of this one. I hope other people like it as much as I do.

Also, I had to include an intro and ending credits this time around so that youtube didn't mute me. The Megaupload file doesn't have them.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P4BEPGU4

Roronoa Zoro - "Rising" by the Yoshida Brothers
    Hidden:
This is my first pure fighting AMV, and it's about Zoro. I don't have much else to say. I had plans to spice it up a bit more but I ran out of time. Thanks to Sai-chan for giving me a spur of the moment critique a couple hours before the match.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4U2HF5KU

Luffy vs Zoro - "Sanctus" by James Dooley.
    Hidden:
This is the AMV I threw together for the final match of the character tournament. It isn't perfect, but it was kind of a rush job. It's certainly not bad, though.

東映アニメーション (Toei Animation) has filed a copyright violation against this video and it was subsequently taken down by youtube.

    Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S2OSFASN

I'll try to keep this original post up to date with all of my AMV's as I release them. I'll also make new posts in this thread for them. Feel free to make any comments/requests you have for me in this thread. I'm happy to take constructive criticism as well. I won't respond to flames, however, and I would request that others follow suit. I also wont respond to all of the compliments because I feel like I'm spamming when I do that. But know in advance that I've read it and I appreciate it.

I'm not making AMV's much anymore since I've had so much difficulty with copyright infringement issues. I'll still make some once in a great while and add them, though.

I have never heard a AMV with "real" death metal but always wanted to. If I find the right song, will you make a AMV out of it? It will be a challenge, but if you succeed, you have possibly created the first AMV that i have fully liked(not just of yours, but all AMVs i have seen). Whatta ya say?

If you can find me a song that suits a character and is dynamic, then I'd probably be willing to give it a shot (I'd have to hear it first before I can give a definite answer). I like to have songs with different sections that can change the mood/feel.

I like all your videos but this Smoker one is definitely one of my favorites. Not only a highly appropriate song choice, but it highlighted a lot of the more humorous scenes he's been in and managed to tell his story in a subtle way. Makes me remember why I like Smoker and why he's not just another generic badass.

    Stiiiiiiilll voting for Brook though.

    Hey, thanks guys!

I said this earlier but I want to reinforce it. If you guys have any suggestions or have any requests, feel free to dump them in this thread. I'm also interested in mistakes that I may have made (though I don't necessarily want mistakes in finished products to become public knowledge, so PM's may be best for those). I appreciate the compliments, but I'm more interested making my work better, and getting people to see it.

    EDIT:
It's not much, but I made it so I'll add it to the list. This is my second (and likely final) match trailer for the Brook vs Smoker matchup.

Sweet work!! I appreciate your effort and skill in making all these AMVs. This is mostly in response to your latest AMV (Sanji).

I'm really loving the way you're incorporating visuals from the manga and the animation while matching the lyrics and beats! Especially awesome are the scenes with animation within a single panel on the screen. It's a little reminiscent of the FLCL manga scenes with the camera panning over pages to land of specific panels with animation in it; maybe you could try incorporating something similar next as a means of transitioning between shots? (Ah, AMVs are gonna mesh with motion graphics any day now... )

Now to get picky. This is personal preference here, but I think it'd be helpful to invest in some more flashy effects for the animated texts / titles, and some more unique and cinematographic fonts. I saw a friend play around on Adobe Fireworks (I think, perhaps AfterEffects) and he got a lot of cool sophisticated effects rather quickly. You got a great sense of choreographing these things, but the current font and sliding effect looks a little "default" and that kind of dampens your vision, even if just a little. It can be a pretty trivial thing to bring up, but I believe nice graphic design goes a long way in making things feel more professional.

It functions well as it is, but from what I can tell you're one of those guys who strive to get better, so I just brought that up just in case. ( And wrote a kinda long crit on a forum. Whoop dee doo! )

Everything else, you get a wholehearted two thumbs up from me. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to your next one! =)

Urouge, I absolutely love your AMV's. I can't imagine the creativity it needs or the ammount of work it requires. Usually AMV's bore me and I don't finish them (like 90% of the random youtube ones), but yours are something else. Great scenes, very fitting music, even synced to the animation. The inserts of fitting manga panels are amazing too and give a great effect.

    Nothing but praise from me.

    Thanks guys.

teez, I would like to improve the text in my AMV's and that's one of the things I'm looking to get better with. I had on my to do list to look into possible plugins for Vegas that provide cool text effects but I'm interested in this Adobe program you're talking about. Do you know if it's a standalone thing or if it can actually work with Vegas? If you have more info on it I'd appreciate it, otherwise I'll just try to dig some up myself. Thanks.

I fully intend to do the AMV style that merges the anime with the manga more often. It's one of my favorite effects to tinker with, since I'm such a huge fan of the manga itself. I'd like to do an AMV that's entirely anime interlaced within the manga, and all the transitions being page turns (forward or backward depending on direction in time). So you guys can expect an AMV like that from me in the near future. For round 4, however, I already have both of my AMV's planned out and the manga merging style doesn't really suit either of them. I hope to do this type of AMV as my first AMV for round 5 (though I haven't planned it out yet).

As much as I liked my Buggy AMV, there were things that weren't polished in the end. Also, I didn't have the software necessary to actually put the anime inside the manga until I made my Nami AMV. Even if I would have had the software back then, I wouldn't have had the skill/experience needed to pull it off. I held myself back from making more AMV's like that until I had all the parts in place, which I finally do.

Also, I went back and revised the AMV that started it all. Jango Jackson is now in full HD with some various minor improvements. It's also available for download.

(the one part with song subtitles was unavoidable due to a corrupted RAW file)

EDIT: Also, recently my Nami AMV was the first to hit 1,000 views. I thought that was worth a mention.

I think it's really good in terms of song choice, storytelling, and timing, but for some reason it doesn't flow quite as well as your other videos. I'm not drawn into it as much, maybe it's just the nature of the song. Felt a little stop and go overall. I also don't think it works so well as a campaign for Robin since it focuses more on the mystery she's trying to solve than her character, though I'm sure the scope of the video was beyond just the tournament in this case. I still think your editing is superb though. It may be that this one just doesn't really appeal to me personally.

Yeah shin the design of this video was beyond the scope of the tournament. It's something that I've been planning for a while.

See the problem is that I have all the episodes, but they are all subbed.

So do I, but I download RAW versions of episodes that I want to use for AMV's.

For all the episodes I've used in my AMV's I have both a RAW version and a subbed version, now.

Urouge -- I've said it before elsewhere, but it bears repeating in your own thread: good stuff!

You've got a great sense of pacing and narrative, and I especially like your attention to details (for example: when Tina Turner says the words "Golden Eye" for the first time, there's an image of Sanji in gold-tinted sunglasses).

Interesting song choices, too (thanks much for avoiding the obvious and the overplayed -- and not just because they're obvious or overplayed, but because they wouldn't be as effective as the more obscure choices).

If you're up for a request, how about an AMV of Tashigi, set to En Vogue's "Love Won't Take Me Out." I don't know if you've heard that song before, but it's got great cinematic potential -- there's an intense piano groove with a little operatic breakdown midway, and lots of talk about being strong but being easily misled, about putting your foot in your mouth all the time, and about being confused about if you love or hate someone.

And then there's the title: "take me out" can mean either "accompany me on a date" or "destroy me".

If you're interested, I'll track down an MP3 for you.
